Happy New Year 2017
Happy New Year from Dr. Lee and Fred Co Kids!
As we look forward to a new year, I would like to propose some family resolutions near and dear to my heart that embrace our practice mission.
Nature and Getting Outside
- How about a family First Day Hike? Visit http://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/firstdayhikes.aspx for planned hikes around our local state park system. Planning outdoor activities like family hikes throughout the year can become a fun part of a family’s day to day lives as well as the centerpiece of creating quality family time.
- Getting outside more also means staying inside less! One of our biggest hurdles is keeping the technology/media monster in check. The AAP Media Plan is an excellent place to start and can be found at https://www.healthychildren.org/English/media/Pages/default.aspx. It is practical and age appropriate. I believe one of the highest priorities a family can establish is a thoughtful and proactive approach to interacting with technology for the entire family (parents too!). The challenge and impact of how we approach this is not only a priority but may be a bedrock of your parenting philosophy. If parenting is about setting boundaries and rules, could technology usage be any better example?
Reading, Tolerance and Listening to One Another
- In a time of political division and unrest, where some members of our society and community may feel threatened or insecure, stories of hope, inspiration and trust may be more important than ever for all of us! A wonderful collection of books for young readers, and not so young ones too, was recently put together by Karen MacPherson of the Washington Post. Nothing can be more inspirational or reassuring to a child than a family book. The stories and messages are timeless and important. Please check it out and hopefully it will become an ongoing family tradition!
