The Stuttering Child

The Stuttering Child- Pediatrician in Mt. Airy and Urbana MDThe Stuttering Foundation recently published a professional guide for pediatricians regarding stuttering. It’s an excellent resource for any family that is dealing with stuttering, and I would encourage you to review it. For those with concerns that your child stutters or is at risk for stuttering, here are the following risk factors:

  1. A positive family history of stuttering
  2. Age of onset after age 3 ½ years
  3. Stuttering has persisted for 6-12 months or longer
  4. Male sex
  5. Other (developmental) speech/language concerns or difficulty being understood

The publication includes medical guidelines for referral, suggestions for parents and a CD for how to assess the child who stutters. I would be glad to lend a personal copy or help interested families get one. It’s an excellent, worthwhile publication and the Stuttering Foundation deserves much credit for making it available at no cost. You can get more information at their website, www.StutteringHelp.org .
